Advanced Dry Eye Treatment at Dutchess Optometry

Dry eye syndrome is a common eye condition that occurs when the eyes do not provide enough lubrication. It can happen due to tears evaporating too fast or insufficient tear production, among other things.

Dealing with constant dry eye can be frustrating and can have an impact on your quality of life. For many people, dry eye syndrome may also indicate meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). This is when the meibomian glands in the eye do not function properly, leading to dry eye.

At Dutchess Optometry, our eye doctors can effectively diagnose and treat dry eye syndrome symptoms. We offer personalized treatment options in Poughkeepsie and Red Hook, to improve your eye health.

Dry Eyes: Signs and Symptoms

Typical signs and symptoms of dry eye syndrome include:

  • A burning or stinging sensation in your eyes
  • Foreign body sensation (feeling like there’s something in your eyes)
  • Redness in your eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Eyes sensitive to light
  • Watery eyes
  • Difficulty driving at night
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses

In more advanced dry eye cases, there can also be an increased risk of eye infections or damage to the eye's surface.

Innovative Dry Eye Solutions for Lasting Relief

Optilight IPL

Optilight IPL, which stands for Intense Pulsed Light therapy, is a treatment that has been adapted for dry eye syndrome, particularly when it's related to MGD.

IPL therapy can reduce inflammation in the eyelid and around the meibomian glands. This inflammation often contributes to MGD, as it can cause the glands to clog and not release the oils needed for a healthy tear film.

The light pulses can stimulate the meibomian glands to function more effectively, helping to unclog the oil glands and increase the production of the oils necessary for tear stability.

Tearcare

TearCare is a device designed to address dry eye symptoms, particularly those associated with MGD. The TearCare system works by applying controlled, localized heat to the eyelids using smart, flexible heat patches applied directly to the outer eyelids.

By unclogging the meibomian glands and restoring their function, TearCare helps improve the quality of the tear film's oil layer, reducing tear evaporation and improving eye comfort.
